I came across this cool campaign through Elle Decoration this morning.
It revolves around the concept that South African city precincts are nameless, unlike, for example, Soho, which gives the precinct a specific feel and sort of global brand. The campaign gives members of the public a say in naming Cape Town‘s Precincts.
Members of the public can:
1. Choose a neighbourhood to rename.
2. Explore the neighbourhood online and find out about precinct specific businesses or quirky things about the precinct.
3. Name the ‘Hood‘, by selecting their own creative name for the ‘Hood’ selected (with a motivation of course), or vote for another individuals name for the precinct.
There will be around two to three ‘Hoods’ available for naming at a time, all the names will be put forward to a panel of ‘architects, planners, musicians, local celebrities and historians’ who will then create a shortlist. The winning name will then be chosen by a public vote.
The Name Your Hood Campaign will open up two neighborhoods for naming on the 4th of July, I will definitely be having a say.
